Omkareshwar Teaching Project

Teach, learn, find yourself!

Omkareshwar

Located in Madhya Pradesh (approximately 3 hours from Indore), Omkareshwar is a place of exceptional beauty and serenity. The island is formed by the sacred Narmada River to create the shape of the Om- a mystical and sacred syllable in the Hindu, Jain, Sikh and Buddhist religions.

Though western travellers are few and far between, many pilgrims and sadhus (yoga practitioners) journey to the island to soak up the peacefulness it radiates.

The island itself has many temples and ancient religious relics to explore but little in the way shops or facilities.  However, a short boat ride or a walk across the river takes you to the mainland where there are many shops and even a computer with Internet access (though with reduced availability due to intermittent electricity supply).  The weekly market on the mainland every Wednesday is the place to find a huge variety of fruit, vegetables, household items and freshly made street food.

Travel to Omkareshwar

Omkareshwar is a 3 hour reliably eventful bus journey from Indore. Taxis are also available but are a more expensive alternative.

There are good train services to and from Indore:

· The Avantika Express runs daily between Mumbai and Indore

· The Malwa Express runs daily between New Delhi and Indore

There are also domestic flights to Indore from both New Delhi and Mumbai; although flights are quite expensive and far less interesting.
