"Mata Anandamayi Ashram's relaxed atmosphere allows visitors to either indulge in their own private practices or play a more active role in the day to day workings. From peeling vegetables to playing volleyball and cricket with the village enthusiasts; there is always something to get involved with. There is also a chance to tackle more challenging avenues, such as, lending a hand at the connected school, which we happily but nervously embarked upon.
Wipe your mind of any expectations you may have about teaching, as each day brings interesting and unusual situations to keep you on your toes and remind you of the Indian ideals of spontaneity and going with the flow. The children with their many and varied ages and characters are friendly, happy and eager to learn; especially if the teaching is more hands on. Games, songs and group work are well received by a class of smiley faces. They also taught us a thing or two, especially with creative talents such as, tabla, harmonium, singing and yoga.
Our advice to any potential teachers is get ready for early mornings, hard work but lots and lots of fun! Leave your watch at home, as time is relative here and be aware that once you enter these gates you may never want to leave. We spent 5 weeks at the ashram but would have been happy to stay much longer and are currently planning a return trip to see the friends we had to leave behind. It was a pleasure to be part of this community and we would recommend anyone to go and experience it for themselves!"
